Carhartt WIP Radio Rewind Volume 5
Continuing with our Rewind series, which sees us spotlight some of our favorite Carhartt WIP Radio shows buried in our archive, this week sees us look back on the emphatic club sounds of Barcelona-based label Hivern Discs, as well as our 2017 show with Twit One, which offered up soul-laden material by one of Germany’s hottest beatmakers. We round things off with a more recent show from 2019, put together by Detroit DJ, label owner, and producer Kenny Dixon Jr., better known as Moodymann. The show focuses on his love for the legendary label Motown, with a detailed mix that includes rare B-sides, interviews, and recordings by Motown artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.
Carhartt WIP Radio September 2016: Hivern Discs - Radio Show
Since 2008, Hivern Discs has disseminated its unique sound out of the heart of Barcelona. In the beginning the label was known for its sample-heavy, disco- and pop-affected house, which was produced by its founder John Talabot and his friend Pional, while also featuring mostly Spanish artists. Today, Hivern features in-demand artists from all around the globe, such as Roman Flügel, Steve Pepe and Khidja. In late 2016 for Carhartt WIP Radio, Hivern Discs boss John Talabot, together with label A&R Daniel Baughman, selected some of their favorite tracks from the label’s catalogue, alongside some then-unreleased and never-to-be-released music.
Carhartt WIP Radio February 2017: Twit One - Radio Show
In winter 2017 Carhartt WIP Radio welcomed Twit One, a man who wears many hats: DJ, producer, co-founder of the Hi-Hat club, creative brain behind AUDDA records, co-owner of the Groove Attack record store in Cologne, and lover of deep jazz and soul. To this day, Twit One remains one of the most feted German beatmakers, with his own self-proclaimed Cool Bap production style – a chilled blend of Boom Bap and cool, soulful jazz, that he has showcased on labels such as MPM, Entbs, and his own AUDDA imprint. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Twit One conjured up a show consisting entirely of original material, with tracks including the UK's Henry Wu; US DJ, producer and trumpet player Miles Bonny; and the subtle sounds of a swarm of grasshoppers.
Carhartt WIP Radio November 2019: Moodymann plays Motown Radio Show
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Motown, the iconic record label launched in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr., Carhartt WIP released a thirteen-piece capsule collection last winter. The project paid tribute to a label that reshaped the sound of American pop music, diversifying its airwaves in the process. To mark the collection launch, Detroit-native Kenny Dixon Jr., aka Moodymann, prepared a strictly-Motown mix for Carhartt WIP Radio show, reflecting his own love for the label. Ever the perfectionist, he delivered a detailed mix featuring rare B-sides, interviews excerpts, and live recordings by artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Kem, and Dazz Band.
