DJ Medhi: Made In France NYC Recap
Last weekend saw the N.Y.C. premiere of "DJ Mehdi: Made in France", a six-episode documentary miniseries on the life of DJ Medhi, a key figure of French music in the last 30 years. Directed by close friend Thibaut de Longeville, the documentary is a detailed celebration of Medhi’s legacy and his enduring, global influence on musicians across genres.
Getting his start as a child prodigy who built his own sampler in early adolescence, Mehdi was launched to prominence as a DJ for the rap group Ideal J when he was just 13 and bridged the worlds of hip-hop and electronic dance music through collaborations with such notable artists as Daft Punk, Cassius, MC Solaar, and Futura 2000 before his untimely passing at 34 years old.
Premiering as part of the 2025 Rendez-Vous with French Cinema festival at Lincoln Center, the festivities kicked off with a pre-party Saturday night at Le Bain in a celebration that featured DJs Eli Escobar and Stretch Armstrong playing alongside Neil Essadi (DJ Mehdi’s son), Charles Prince and Bé. On Sunday, attendees were welcomed to the Walter Reade Theatre in Lincoln Center for the screening and a Q&A held by the documentary’s director, Thibaut
Photographer Isaac Wheatley was on hand for both events and captured the images seen here. "DJ Mehdi: Made in France" will be available for worldwide viewers soon.
