Five Pocket Favorites
The term five-pocket is typically used to connote jeans, owing to the two front and two rear pockets, and that little “coin” pocket nestled inside one of the front pockets, which you definitely never use. But it sounds better, and ironically more utilitarian, than simply ‘jeans’. Plus, there’s styles in here which are executed in non-denim fabrics. Browse through a selection of our favorite ones for this season, from slim and tapered to loose and relaxed.
Exhibit A: Newel Pant
The Newel Pant is a five pocket which has been designed with minimum fuss and a focus on a good fit and good fabrics, of which there are three – a washed black denim, a more traditional indigo iteration, and a soft corduroy. This corduroy fabric is new for F/W18, and is eight wales, which is nothing to do with the country that makes up part of the UK, but the width of the cord ridge. (Eight is a pretty standard ridge width). The Newel Pant has a roomier fit than most straight-cut silhouettes, but tapers below the knee.
Exhibit B: Simple Pant
The simple pant is based off a classic work-pant silhouette, and channels that in the form of triple stitching and big, roomy rear pockets. It comes in a straight fit that errs slightly to the loose-side of things.
Exhibit C: Pontiac Pant
These are jeans as archetypal as they come, with a straight leg cut that’s neither too loose nor too tapered. They’re created in only one fabric, a 13oz denim (quite heavy as fabrics go), but there is options in which hue of blue you opt for. There’s a rigid indigo, which will fade and patina over time, or variations where you can skip straight to that washed, worn-in look. The choice is yours.
Exhibit D: Klondike Pant
The Klondike Pant has a simple, straight-leg with a very subtle taper below the knee. That’s it, there’s not much more else to say – the branding is minimal, save for a leather tab on the rear pocket, and it appears in a selection of fabrics, like the tough 12oz Edgewood Denim, and the more lightweight Grenada Denim, which has had added stretch woven into it, for improved comfort. Easy.
Exhibit E: Vicious Pant
Like the Klondike Pant, the Vicious Pant is another regular-fitting pant, but this time it’s a touch slimmer. The branding is even more discrete, with a minimal leather pocket tab, and there’s also the option of a midweight cotton twill, to complement the other robust denim options it appears in. These are simple, everyday pants that will probably look even better the more they’re worn.
